The Writing Year That Wasn’t

I wasn’t a writer in 2015, but I remained a reader.

I revisited many of those genres that I haven’t read in a while including horror, true crime, and the cozy mystery.

For the cozies, I prefer the couples solving crimes together (don’t forget I’m a lover of romance)  But the romantic cozy mystery didn’t hold the magic that it once did for me and I only read a few.

They were fun and well-written, but I kept thinking there was something missing. Like – is she going to kiss this guy? Is she ever going to do anything more than kiss this guy?

Calm yourself down, chick! That’s all that happens in a cozy! (Words from one of best friends who didn’t share my desire for something spicier)

And she wasn’t alone. As I trolled the forums on Goodreads, I found that many cozy readers want the unique setting and a host of quirky minor characters without excessive violence, profanity and graphic sex.

So I have a genre question what combines the elements of a cozy with a steamy romance?

A Romantic Suspense?

  • Romantic Suspense: Romance novels in which suspense, mystery, or thriller elements constitute an integral part of the plot. (From Romance Writers of America

This makes me think of the In Death series by J.D. Robb which I love! But it doesn’t have the lightness of the Death on Demand series by Carolyn Hart. Can I have the passion of Eve Dallas and Roark paired with the sweetness of Ann and Max Darling?

I’m a reader and I want to see it done.

But does such a thing exist?

Wait a minute, peeps. I was a writer in 2014.

And in 2016, I’m introducing (insert drum roll)… Portia Andrade – amateur sleuth of color, fierce lover of one man who battles lifelong demons of her own while she solves a mystery or two.

Check back in a few days and I’ll give you Portia’s short story and let you know when her first novella will be ready!

***And cheers to the year of the writer!***

The Last Time Release Event ~ Hosted by Elodie Parkes

Thank you for inviting me to the blog for the release of The Last Time, my latest contemporary, erotic romance. Available May 1, 2013, from Eternal Press

Just a little about me to let your readers know who I am.

I live in rural England, United Kingdom and I work in an antiques shop as well as writing. I have two dogs that keep me fit with their need for walks. Love the countryside and the coast.

I write romance, contemporary, and erotic with a twist of mystery, suspense, or the paranormal, now and then. I like to make the story unusual in some way, by a quirk in the tale.

I started writing when I was seventeen. Life intervened in my writing time and I stopped serious writing for some time. I started writing again seriously a couple of years ago, because I had so many stories in my head.

The Last Time_150dpi_eBookThe Last Time

Actor Seth Carbery swears he will never fall in love again, that is until he meets private detective Bethany Snow.

Something strange is going on. Seth and other members of the movie cast and crew are receiving threatening letters, but no threat has ever been carried out… yet. Bethany Snow is sent on location by the Black Agency to investigate, and guard Seth Carbery against danger.

The case is not what it first seems and even when Bethany thinks it could be over, a new twist means she becomes a target.

Seth and Bethany find they can’t keep their hands off each other.

Who is sending the letters and why? Does Seth have a secret admirer or stalker?

With steamy romance, graphic love scenes, and a quirky story of what people do for love this erotic romance is for adults only.

Seth made a little sound of need. He felt he was in a fog of lust and sensation, surprised he was thick and hard again.

Bethany took as much of his length into her mouth as she could. She sucked and swirled her tongue around the shape of him. She moved her lips up his shaft and then nuzzled the velvet end of him.

Seth was beginning to thrust his hips and sigh. He felt Bethany’s hair spread out across his stomach. It felt soft and teasing. He reached to grasp a handful, as Bethany began to do the best thing he had ever felt with her mouth, her tongue, her hands cupping him, grasping him, until his entire body was sensitized, and then it all began to pool in the bottom of his stomach, and then lower. Between his thighs where she cupped him was pulsing with sensation, and he was moaning and thrusting.

Bethany sucked suddenly deeper, harder, and he was coming, moaning with the intense feeling. He heard himself groan. It lasted a long time and Bethany held him until he had finished. She was very gentle taking him out of her mouth. Seth moaned a little feeling a loss. Bethany kissed up his body and left a wet trail across his nipples, her own hardened peaks brushing his body.

Seth held her head and brought her face to his. He realized she must have swallowed his seed, and only a trace of the taste was on her lips as he tenderly kissed her.

She moved back just slightly to whisper against his lips.

“Seth, put your fingers in me. Feel how much I need you. I’ll come very quickly if you just let me move on them. You’re so delicious.”

Seth was enchanted by this. He hadn’t been with that many women, and none of them had talked like this, nor made love like this.

He kissed her again and tenderly pushed his fingers into her. Her gasp of pleasure and the way she began to move on him almost had him moaning again. He held her head and kissed her softly as she murmured against his lips, coming just as she had said very quickly. He left his fingers inside her, and then kissed her hard, holding her head with his hand tangled in her hair.

DangerousEmbrace.inddSarah Jennings wants nothing more than a quiet life—alone.

Raised by an eccentric mother, their life on the road only taught her how to run away from hard times. But when she finds herself in an abusive relationship, this lesson serves her well.

Now, back in her hometown, she’s found a place she loves. She’s a first grade teacher, and with few friends and less family around, she has what she wants, a quiet life under the radar where she can be free of her past and live quietly. Finally comfortable in her own skin, she’s settled, and less fearful than she’s ever been in her life.

But it only takes one night and one act of violence for everything to change. Injured and afraid, Sarah wants to run again, but Mark Summors refuses to let her go.

Just when Sarah thinks she can have Mark and the life he promises, her past comes back to haunt her.

Mark Summors was born and raised in Santa Rosa. He married his high school sweetheart and never questioned his life, until he found his wife with another man.

Now divorced, he wants something more. He’s passionate about his job, he wants to protect people, and he devotes his life to it.

This time he’s protecting more than just another client, he’s protecting his future; at least, Sarah Jennings will be his future, once he convinces her she loves him.

Sarah pried open her heavy eyelids and turned, trying to focus on the clock. “Ow, dammit!” She clenched her teeth and looked down at the sling tied to her arm. The smothering realization pressed on her chest. When the nausea hit, she flung the covers off and rushed to the bathroom, fighting to get to the toilet before her stomach heaved.

When the painful dry heaving stopped, she lay back on the cold tile floor, exhausted, and waited for the room to stop spinning. Her ragged breaths roared in her ears and seemed to echo in the quiet room. When her breathing slowed, the silence ebbed around her in waves, but when footsteps approached the bathroom door, she tensed again.

A bead of sweat dripped down her scalp and at the same time someone tapped at the door. Her pulse spiked and she fought like hell to remember who brought her home from the hospital.

She closed her eyes. “Who’s there?” The waver in her voice pissed her off. Gawd—please don’t let me be pathetic in front of whoever this is.

A hesitant and completely unfamiliar man’s voice said, “Are you all right? Do you need something?”

Sarah sucked in a hard breath. “Um…” She exhaled slowly. “Who are you?”

“Mark Summors.”

She stiffened and tried to sit up. “Do I know you?” she asked her voice pitching.

“I can explain if you open the door.”

She steadied herself against the bathtub. The sling had slipped up her arm, exposing the trail of bruises. She swallowed another wave of nausea and tried to put the pieces together. Mark Summors? She glanced around for something to use as a weapon just in case, then she wanted to laugh—and cry. Who the hell was she kidding? She rolled her eyes. Good plan, Sarah, take on a strange guy with a toilet brush.

“Can I come in?”  His voice was muffled as if he was resting his face against the door.

“Go ahead.” She clamped her mouth closed to suppress a shiver, then said, “It’s unlocked.”

The door eased open and a cup of water shot out at her.

“Oh, thank you,” she cried out, relieved to wash the disgusting film out of her mouth. She snatched the cup out of his hand and gulped it, letting her eyes lift above the rim to see his face.

“Ah.” Sarah choked and inhaled the water. She set the cup down, almost upending it as she dropped it. “Oh my God!” She would never forget those intense blue eyes, just like she would never forget the smell of her attacker’s breath. They were all thrown together in the same horrifying memory.

Win or lose, Lee’s fate is hers.

After a shocking turn of events turns their lives inside out Michelle and Lee both discover the greatest treasure to be won.

Love. For it conquers all no matter the price.

“What I want is to stop your pain. If I could have my wish it would be…I’d want our child to have lived.” His expression stilled and grew serious.

“Let’s be honest, Lee. Any child you and I have we’d destroy, after we destroyed each other.” She made to move around him and he stepped with her, blocking her pass. “Lee, move.”

“Take it back!” He frowned with cold fury.

Michelle adjusted her smile. “Why?”

“Don’t you ever dismiss our child’s death. Take it back!” he said through clenched teeth.

Michelle, shaken by the threat in his tone, had to lower her gaze. “Okay.”

Lee’s voice dropped an octave when he spoke again. “We lost our baby. It’s my fault. I should have protected you, trusted my instincts.”

“Lee, please stop.”

“I’ll make them pay. I’ll kill ’em all—”

“Stop it, dammit!” Lee blinked at her, confused. “Stop, okay? No more violence. I can’t take it.”

He touched her and she shrugged off his hand. Lee persisted and she was forced into his arms. Soon hers, of their own accord, were circling his waist. He kissed the top of her head. Stroked her hair.

“My first priority is you. I had to make sure you were okay, Michelle. Now that you are we’re starting again. Nothing has changed between us.” He relaxed his hold on her and brushed her cheeks with the backs of his fingers. She tensed over how soothing his touch was. With mild force, Lee grabbed her face in both hands. He brought his forehead down to hers until their skulls met. Michelle winced over the burn it drove through her brow, and gripped his wrist, trying hard to free herself. But his lips covered hers before she could manage the break. A crushingly needy kiss followed. She softened under its weight.

“Forgive me.” He breathed into her mouth, trying to pry her lips apart for another kiss. “Damn it, Michelle, forgive me, baby. Don’t make me beg.”

Michelle lowered her hands from his wrists. The caress of his lips inspired a trickle of love, sparking forbidden desires for him in her heart. What the hell was wrong with her? How could she even stomach the thought of them, together, now? Yet she could. It would be her secret truth. She loved him so badly, the truth hurt.

Today’s Hero – Dylan Bishop of Rainie’s Lake

Dylan and Rainie’s Turn to Talk

Rainie’s Lake by Brenda Woody & Steve Tindle

Thank you for joining us today as we chat with Dylan and Rainie on the porch at the cabin.  This is our first interview with characters and both let us know they wanted to chat! Now, we won’t allow them to give spoilers away, but we do hope you’ll come to love these two as we do. And we’re featuring a giveaway! Details below.

We’re sitting here enjoying the breathtaking view of the pine trees and the serene mountains. Dylan is making us coffee. He’s such the host! Rainie will be here soon.

Later if you want to stretch your legs and walk about, you’ll probably find Rainie down by the lake. She wanders in the fog early mornings and before dusk. Be careful by the lake’s edge, the fog is thick and the water is freezing this time of year. The dock would be the safest place to stand and chat with her one on one.

Ah, here’s Dylan now with steaming mugs to go around. Thanks Dylan!

Brenda & Steve: Dylan, we hope you’re enjoying your vacation. Tell us a little bit about you and your job as an art instructor.

Dylan: You’re welcome and actually I am! Well, *chuckles* I’m really pretty boring. I love to fish so when I saw the ad for the cabin with the private dock, and the spectacular view, I knew this place was my destination. I teach at the local arts and design college within a few miles of my home. Every quarter, I have the pleasure of instructing very gifted students; about 15 to 20 in the class. I guess being one of the youngest instructors helps too. My students and I really connect.

Brenda & Steve: We did hear the fishing is good in these parts. What prompted this alone time?

Dylan: This vacation was long over due since I haven’t taken time for myself in four years. As you can see it’s a beautiful area for an artist to get the creative juices flowing. I hoped to find inspiration to put the brush to canvas and I did. *grins*

Brenda & Steve: We see the grin on your face. And here’s the reason! Hi Rainie, glad you could join us.

*Dylan stands and offers Rainie his chair*

Rainie: *smiles and sits, pulling the hood away from her head* Hi Brenda and Steve!

*Dylan rests his hand on her shoulder. Rainie places her hand over his, giving it a squeeze*

Brenda & Steve: Rainie, you’re from this area. Tell us a little bit about yourself and growing up here.

Rainie: I grow up in the next town. After I graduated from college, I returned and taught at the grammar school. My parents rented this cabin a few times when I was a little girl. I have wonderful memories of playing out by the dock and on the lake that I try to keep in the forefront of my mind because there’s a sad memory here too. *tightens her grip on Dylan’s hand*

Brenda & Steve:*sighs* We know there are good times and bad times here, so let’s keep the chat in a happy mode for now. Dylan, what was it about Rainie that drew you to her.

Dylan: *takes a lingering glance at Rainie* Her eyes captured me. They’re a beautiful green and get darker depending on her mood. Oh, and her smile which reaches her eyes first.  Ummm, her butt too; I loved watching her walk away but hoped she would always return. *winks at Rainie*

Brenda & Steve: That’s so sweet and romantic! Rainie, same question to you. What drew you to Dylan?

Rainie: *blushes* Dylan, you just had to add how much you liked my backside! Let’s see, he makes great coffee don’t you think! *laughs* His boyish good looks, sandy hair and his kindness.  I’ve never met a man as kind and giving as Dylan.

Brenda & Steve: Dylan, you did find your inspiration since you’ve been here. What are you going to paint?

Dylan: A portrait of Rainie, of course. I’ll hang it on the wall so if and when I return; she’ll always be in the cabin.

Brenda & Steve: (Brenda) *sniffs, noticing the sad look on Rainie’s face* Okay, I’m getting teary-eyed all over again. Rainie and Dylan, thank you for chatting with us today. We want to leave before the fog rolls in.

Rainie: *stands* Thank you Brenda and Steve. I need to take my walk near the lake. Dylan, we’ll work on the sketch later this evening?

Dylan: *rises, takes Rainie’s hand and softly kisses her lips* Sure Rainie. Just a few more touches and I’ll be ready to paint. Bye Brenda and Steve, thanks for stopping by.

*Before walking towards their car, Brenda & Steve watch the intimate exchange between the lovers*

Taking a long over due vacation, Art Instructor, Dylan Bishop is eager to start his trip to the cabin in the mountains. When he saw the photo online with the rental ad, he knew this was his destination. Being drawn to the lake nestled behind the cabin with a private dock, Dylan hopes to regain his inspiration to paint.

His vacation takes an erotic turn when he meets Rainie Marks on a foggy morning by the dock. She is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen. However, there is sadness and a mystery about her. Finding his inspiration, he sketches her one evening and unable to resist the passion that has sparked between them, Rainie and Dylan share a sensual night together.

When Rainie tells him the truth about her past and the lake, the mystery she hides unfolds. The key to everything is the lake. Will Dylan be able to help her put the past to rest?

Today’s Hero – Dalton Beck with Yvonne Harriott

Author’s Bio:

Yvonne Harriott is a member of Romance Writers of America. She has written two collections of short stories – a romantic collection entitled, “The Wedding and Other Short Romantic Stories” and “The Invitation and Other Short Stories – a dramatic collection. “Hide ‘N Seek” is her debut romantic suspense novel. The sequel, “Cat ‘N Mouse” was published at the end of August. Writing is her passion. Yvonne loves to travel. She has a sweet tooth, and simply can’t live without Lay’s potato chips!

Interview with Dalton Beck: My interview today is with Dalton Beck, CEO of Beck Security Systems. He’s been voted CEO of the Year by Magazine. That gets him on the front cover of the magazine and a full page article. And I got the honour of interviewing him. After the photo shoot, we walked back to his office. Not what I had expected for an executive office. It was the metal shelves and stacks of computer printouts that threw me.

DB: CEO of the Year, eh? (He sits directly across from me. I notice his shirt is unbuttoned at the neck. I can’t help but stare at the scars at the base of his neck, almost blending in with his chestnut brown skin.)

YH: Yes. (Quickly, I shift my eyes to meet his penetrating dark gaze and I swear my heart skipped a beat. He knows where I was staring. He doesn’t say anything. Perhaps he’s used to it.) Your resume is pretty impressive. You graduated from university with top honours, MBA. You’re one of the youngest CEOs that we’ve given this award to. You support numerous charities. Your track record is very impressive. A few years ago no one had ever heard of Beck Security Systems. Now your company is making waves in the security industry.

DB: Is there a question in there? (He smiles. The phone on the desk rings and he informs his assistant to hold his calls for the next twenty minutes.)

YH: (I laugh because I can’t help myself. I should get my act together and follow my notes instead of drooling over the man.) Why the security business? Your father is a chef and your stepmother is an interior designer. None of their skills rubbed off on you?

DB: Why not the security business, Ms. Harriott? (Okay…so his family was not up for discussion.)

YH:  Please call me, Yvonne.

DB:  Yvonne, the crime rate is increasing across the country at an alarming rate. (He quotes statistics and hands me a folder.) Our clients tell us they want to feel safe in their homes. (He leans forward resting his elbows on the desk and I swear the muscles rippled in his chest. Focus on his words not his body.) We provide top of the line security systems to all of our clients.

YH:  What about the rumour that the security systems your company has been installing are malfunctioning? I hear you’ve hired Brooks Investigations to troubleshoot the problem.

DB: I didn’t think your magazine participated in rumour, Ms. Harriott. (His eyes narrow. Suddenly I feel the cold chill of his dark gaze.)

YH: I thought you might want to address that.

DB: Nothing to address.

YH: (I glance down at my notes.) Describe your typical work day?

DB: There’s no such thing as a typical work day for me. My day begins at 5:00 am with an hour workout at the gym or on my treadmill at home, depending on what I have on the go that day. I’m in the office by 7:00 am. I pretty much work until I complete what I have on my agenda for that day. I’m on 24/7.

YH: When do you find time to play?

DB: Define play? (He smiles at me and I’m thinking red silk sheets.)

YH: What do you do to unwind? Come on, you’re successful and you seem to play hard. You really don’t expect me to believe you’re on “24/7”?

DB: I exercise to unwind. I travel when I find the time.

YH: What does your family think of your work schedule? (I’m fishing again.)

DB: My wife died in a boating accident a long time ago. Since then, I’ve devoted all my time to building my company. (His phone rings again. He picks it up and then checks his watch. He flicks a glance in my direction. My twenty minutes are definitely up.)

YH: That’s it for my questions. May I still get a tour of the building and meet some of your employees?

DB: Yes. Please see my assistant on your way out. I have asked her to assist you in that regard.

YH: Great. Thank you for your time, Mr. Beck.

DB: Ms. Harriott… (He gets up and walks me to the door. He raises an inquiring brow.)

YH: Yes. You can see a copy before it goes to print, but I get to choose the picture on the front cover of the magazine. (He smiles and we shake hands. I almost gasp as a tingle runs up my arm. I am a journalist and must keep my cool. When I finally turn and walk away he closes the door behind me.)

Happy Writing!

Sunday Snippet with Stephanie Norris

All About Stephanie Norris

Stephanie Nicole Norris is a new up and coming romance fiction author from Chattanooga Tennessee with a humble beginning. She was raised along with six siblings by her mother, Jessica Ward. Always being a lover of reading from early childhood, Stephanie loved to books by R.L. Stine, fantasy, and paranormal. Stephanie always had a natural talent for writing. Starting her journey in 2010 she decided to bring her stories to life. In 2011 her debut novel “Trouble In Paradise” was completed and published in early 2012. A romance drama about a 28 year old African American female trying to better herself with a internship and marrying the love of her life, but runs into road blocks and things get so out of control that there are major changes for her future. Her pages tell a story filled with deception, suspense, and a dramatic twist. Stephanie is inspired by writers like Eric Jerome Dickey, Jackie Collins, Gwynne Forster, and more. She resides in Atlanta Ga.

Stephanie’s Journey into Writing

What inspired you to write your first book? I always wanted to write. It was a no brainer because I always had these stories. It was really more about having the time to write and putting the work in that it takes to get a good book written. In 2010 I decided to make it work so I started to write Trouble In Paradise with pen and paper. I actually came up with the ending first and it was the brightest light bulb yet. LOL! And that’s what truly inspired the book.

What do you consider most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?  When it comes to writing it is such a retreat for me. I would say that the publishing process has to be the most challenging. The writing is the easy part but books are a business and in any business there are pros and cons.

Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it? I wrote this book purely for entertainment with the intentions of giving the reader an escape from their daily routine and everyday lives. I loved everything about writing it. When I read it, I pulled myself in and at the end of it I thought; I’d hate to be in Victoria’s shoes! Sometimes a man isn’t worth it!

Do you intend to make writing a career? Yes I do intend to make writing a full time career. God willing.

What is your greatest strength as a writer? I’m a good storyteller. Once I get the scene in my head everything comes together like a puzzle piece and it excites me. Oh, and sometimes I can be a bit of a drama queen.

Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it? I think every writer goes through this in their writing career.  Sometimes you just draw a blank. I find the best way to get rid of it is to walk away and come back to it later.

Vengeful Intentions by Stephanie Norris

After serving eight long months in jail and becoming obsessed with the woman who put her there Danielle Shumaker is released when the evidence held against her comes up missing.  With Victoria clouding her mind with thoughts of revenge Danielle is caught off guard when someone else wants to make her pay for her past transgressions.

Not needing the added drama Victoria is still torn between her feelings toward Greg and her undying love for Joshua.  With new knowledge that Danielle has been released from jail; Victoria is stunned into disbelief knowing that Joshua has not been honest with her.

Things get even hotter when Joshua catches wind of Victoria’s affair and Caroline wants her husband back by any means necessary.  Will this love story end in tragedy or will these couples learn to forgive and forget? Find out in part II of Trouble In Paradise.

Can you share a little of your current work with us? I’m getting ready to release Vengeful Intentions Part II of Trouble In Paradise this month.  I’m shooting for July 16th but it may be later in that week.

How did you come up with the title? I come up with my titles depending on the story I’m writing.  Vengeful Intentions is a sequel to my first book entitled Trouble In Paradise and it starts off eight months later.  There is a lot of revenge, drama, sex and suspense.

How can we purchase your book? My books can be purchased via my website and Trouble In Paradise is available now on Amazon Kindle.

The Writing Life of Stephanie Norris

Who are your favorite authors and why? Eric Jerome Dickey and Jackie Collins. If you don’t know why, you must to get their books!

Have you started another book yet? I have started a short story and I’ve left some doors open in Part II of Trouble In Paradise so I’ve starting writing Part III.

Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years I hope to have a successful full time writing career and I hope to be married and own my own home.

Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest and why? There are plenty of new authors but to name a few Denesha Sheree, Deidra Ds Green, and Deatri King-Bey are three of the hardest working and kind women I’ve met in the literary business.

What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out? I suggest they pick up Become A Successful Author by Deatri King-Bey.

Do you have any specific last thoughts that you want to say to your readers? I would like to thank my reader’s for giving a new author a chance and indulging in Trouble In Paradise and Vengeful Intentions!  I really appreciate your support.
